Nuclear Medicine Interest: Preparing Your Application

Prerequisite Courses (must be complete by June 1 before fall of admission)

  • RHET:1030 Rhetoric (4 s.h.)
  • PSY:1001 Elementary Psychology (3 s.h.)
  • General Education 3 sh from two different categories (6 sh total) may be chosen from the following areas:
    • Diversity and Inclusion (DI)
    • Historical Perspectives (HP)
    • International and Global Issues (IGI)
    • Literary, Visual, and Performing Arts (LVPA)
    • Values and Culture (VC)
  • Quantitative or Formal Reasoning may be chosen from the following:
    • MATH:1440  Math for the Biological Sciences (4 s.h.)
    • MATH:1020  Elementary Functions (4 s.h.)
  • CLSA 3750 Medical and Technical Terminology (2 s.h.)
  • Natural Sciences:
    • CHEM:1110 Principles of Chemistry I (4 s.h.)
    • Anatomy requirement may be selected from one of the following:
      • HHP:1100  Human Anatomy (3 s.h.)
      • HHP:3105  Anatomy for Human Physiology (3 s.h.)
      • HHP:3115  Anatomy for Human Physiology with Lab (5 s.h.)
    • Physiology requirement may be selected from one of the following:
      • HHP:1300  Fundamentals of Human Physiology (3 s.h.)
      • HHP:3500  Human Physiology (3 s.h.)
      • HHP:3550  Human Physiology with Lab (5 s.h.)
    • Physics requirement may be selected from one of the following:
      • PHYS:1400  Basic Physics (3 s.h.)  (lab is not required)
      • PHYS:1511  College Physics I (4 s.h.) (lab is part of the course and cannot be separated)
  • 60 s.h. of coursework (60 s.h. can be awarded for the ARRT(R) certification)

Recommended elective courses for all tracks:

  • RSP: 1100 Introduction to Radiation Sciences
  • CS:1020 Principles of Computing or MSCI:1500 Business Computing Essentials
  • STAT:1020 Elementary Statistics or STAT:3510 Biostatistics
  • BIOL:1140 Human Biology or HHP:1400 Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • CHEM:1120 Principles of Chemistry II

Notes on application and admission:

  • Apply in advance of the final January 15 deadline to allow for processing time.
  • Three professional references are required.
  • Admission to Nuclear Medicine is not guaranteed. Application and selection process is required due to limited clinical openings.
  • Job shadowing, health care experience (paid or volunteer), and research of professional field(s) are crucial to a successful application.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required to apply.
  • Personal interview on campus for invited applicants.

Nuclear Medicine has an Early Acceptance option.

  • Half of all prerequisites completed, 30 s.h., and 2.5 overall GPA by June 1, with a plan to complete the remaining prereqs the following year.
  • Admission into the College of Medicine and the Nuclear Medicine Technology Program is contingent upon the successful completion of all prereqs.
