Each semester follows the same basic pattern
Early Semester Schedule Changes
- Week 1 – During the first week students can change schedule (adds, drops, or section changes) through MyUI.
- Week 2 – During the second week students can make changes with permission from instructors and advisors
- Introduction to Advising meetings take place during this period in your first fall semester at Iowa
Planning
- Planning Appointments take place during weeks 3-10 (September/October for fall and February/March for spring)
- These meetings are about discussing the big picture for your time at Iowa. We’ll talk about your social and academic transition to college, campus resources, your goals, exploring academic plans, possible courses for next semester, and long term planning for your path to graduation.
Drop Deadline
- The Drop Deadline refers to the last day to drop a semester-length course without approval from the college Dean.
- This deadline is usually at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th week (mid-November for fall or mid-April for spring)
- You will still need your Academic Advisor’s authorization. Some students may require additional permissions (from Athletics, ISSS, etc.)
- This is also the deadline to do a complete withdrawal from the semester
Registration Authorization
- Students must be authorized to register for future semesters by their Academic Advisor
- A registration date/time (based on credit earned) is assigned to each student and posted on MyUI. This is the “Early Registration” period – which just means this is the earliest period for each student to register, but registration can happen later.
- Students should schedule a Registration Authorization appointment with their advisor a few days prior to their assigned registration time.
- Any registration holds/restrictions will also be posted on MyUI. Students must resolve each hold with the appropriate office before they can register.
End of Semester
- At the end of week 15 all courses close.
Week 16 is Final Exam Week
