Tips for a smooth registration
You can do it!
You have all the info you need to troubleshoot any snags you encounter during registration.
Prioritize your classes over your class times
Start by listing the classes you need and want to take. Then use the Schedule Builder to see how those choices fit together. It can be tempting to try for a schedule without morning classes, or without Fridays. But, being flexible on times and days of the week will provide you with more options to set yourself up for success.
Make your appointment, keep your appointment
Schedule it for a date falling before your registration date (posted in MyUI) and do your best to attend the appointment. You should cancel only in circumstances where it is impossible to attend for illness, serious injury, or other emergency.
Come prepared
Have a list of courses with titles and numbers ready before your appointment. Where possible, make sure that you have lots of backup classes in case your first choices don’t work out. It’s a good idea to have 3-4 back up classes for each elective and gen ed category.
Use resources
Use MyUI features like your degree audit, sample plans, and the search by general education category function to help you identify courses. Schedule Builder giving you a hard time? See below for in-person and online help options.
Stay calm
If classes you need are full, don’t panic. The first day of Fall classes is four months away, which is plenty of time to problem solve! See the FAQs below for information on next steps when classes you need are full.
Registration authorization procedures
Where can I find my assigned registration date and time?
On right side of MyUI Home tab.
My friend registers before me. Can I get an earlier time because I need classes in high demand?
Sorry, no. For more information, please read the registration date assignment policy established by the Registrar.
I have registration holds. Should I clear those before I meet my advisor?
No, don’t wait—go ahead and meet with your advisor! While you can register/join waitlists only after your registration date/time has passed AND you have no registration holds, you will need to be authorized to register anyway. It is one step you can resolve as you wait for your registration time and work on resolving your registration holds.
I have registration holds. Where do I go for help having them removed?
Check the list of your registration holds on MyUI. Contact information is provided for each registration hold that you have. Email the contact listed for info on how you can resolve your registration holds.
Do I have to meet with my advisor in order to get authorization to register?
Yes. Students whose primary advisor is in the Academic Advising Center must meet with their academic advisor for registration authorization.
What if my advisor’s calendar is completely booked and I can’t get an appointment before my registration date and time?
First, schedule the first available appointment, even if it is after your assigned date and time.
Second, check the MyUI scheduler to see if your advisor has drop-in times. If they do, arrive as close to the beginning of those times as possible and be prepared to wait.
Third, do your best to prepare. If you're not sure what you should take, consult your degree audit, MyPlan, Sample Plans, or the General Catalog.
Using Schedule Builder
When should I start building and saving schedules in Schedule Builder?
You can go ahead and practice in the Schedule Builder as soon as you want. But, it will be important to build another preferred schedule about an hour before your registration date and time, just to make your selections remain available.
What is the best way to use Schedule Builder filters?
The magic of the Schedule Builder is that it will build every conceivable schedule with the courses that you pick. If you use filters to designate particular times, it won't build as many schedules for you to choose from. And if you designate a particular discussion/lab section on a lecture course, when that specific section fills, the Schedule Builder won't build at all. Be intentional when using filters so that the builder can work as intended and present you with all of the schedule possibilities at the moment of registration. Read more about course filters here.
I built the perfect preferred schedule, but it failed to register me for all my classes?
How do I know if I’m eligible for a reserved (“restricted”) seat in a section of the course I want?
Hover the cursor over the “Restricted” line in the Notes column to see if you are in the reservation group. Info is also available in the MyUI course description.
Is there in-person help available to me if I have questions about building/saving schedules, registering in MyUI, and joining waitlists?
- April 18 from 10 am-2pm
- April 28-May 2 from 10am-2pm
Closed classes, preferred time unavailable, and waitlists
Help! The course section I want/need closed!
Stay calm. This is common for lots of students, so try not to panic. We have four months before Fall, which leaves time to problem solve.
- Enroll in everything else that is available
- Look up the filled class on MyUI. Are there other sections open that will fit with your schedule?
- Enroll in a section that would work and join the waitlist for your favorite section.
- No sections open? Join the waitlist for ALL sections that will work for you.
I don’t want to take this class at the times available. Should I wait until my preferred time opens?
Don’t wait. You may have to be flexible in the end, taking a class at a time you don’t prefer. We don’t want you missing out on a class you need to stay on track just because the time isn’t the best. What you can do is: register for a seat in any of the open sections, and then add yourself to the waitlist.
How do I get on a waitlist?
- Look up course in MyUI. Click "join waitlist" next to every section that will work with your schedule (pay attention to times). For lecture/discussion classes, the lecture will be added automatically.
- If you have waitlisted for multiple sections of the same class and you accept a seat from the waitlist, you are dropped from all other waitlists for that class. If you still want to be considered, re-join the waitlist for other sections.
- MyUI has additional info on waitlists. You can also watch this video for info on joining waitlists.
Can I see my spot on the waitlist?
No, but that’s okay. Course availability changes according to so many different factors that knowing your place on the list isn’t always a good predictor.
Should I choose a back-up class while I wait for a seat on the waitlist?
Yes. You should discuss those during your registration authorization meeting, but if you need to make a last-minute change, go ahead and register for the back-up, using your degree audit and sample plans to make an educated guess. You can check with your advisor in to see if the class is “okay.”
Getting in touch with my advsior and next steps
I emailed my advisor. Why haven’t they responded yet?
Peak registration time is super busy for academic advisors. They prioritize appointments over emails, but do their best to get back to you as soon as possible. However, keep in mind that advisors have back-to-back appointments all day, as well as a higher-than-normal volume of email. Be patient; it may be a day or two before they can respond. Meanwhile, stay calm and remember that your schedule does not need to be finalized until Fall classes start, which is months away.
I’m still not sure about these classes (or some of my classes are missing). How long do I have to get my schedule finalized?
You can still make changes to your Fall schedule in MyUI through the first week of classes.
You may set up an appointment with your advisor to go over making changes.
Here are some tips on how to make changes to your schedule. You can also watch this video on schedule changes.
