Graduate Program Admission
The undergraduate Speech and Hearing Science major is designed primarily to prepare students for graduate work.  There are over 200 colleges and universities that offer graduate degrees in speech-language pathology and/or audiology.  Students must complete 25 hours of clinical observations before they can work with clients at the graduate level.  Review the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) website
https://www.asha.org for more information.

The minimum education required in order to become a speech-language pathologist is a master’s degree.  The minimum education required to become an audiologist is the clinical doctorate (AuD).  The MA is a two-year program; the AuD is a four-year program.  The UI accepts 20-25 students from across the nation into its MA program each year, which is typical for most programs.  The UI accepts about eight students each year to its AuD program.  No preference is given to UI graduates.

The average GPA for students admitted to the UI’s MA program is approximately 3.8.  The average minimum GPA at many other programs is 3.5.  (The UI is the #1 ranked program in the nation.)  GPAs of below 3.4 are typically not competitive for admission to most graduate programs.  GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and patterns of grades during the undergraduate program play a part in admissions decisions.
