Admission is selective. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Application Requirements
  • 30 s.h. earned (must be completed prior to application deadline)
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher is recommended, but not mandatory
  •  Minimum 10-hour Pre-Admission School Field Experience in a regular 5-12 classroom in the subject area to which you are applying
  • Two recommendations
    • Recommendation form may be downloaded from the College of Education website.
    • Applicants for Elementary Education should obtain at least one reference from a college professor or teaching assistant.
  •  Résumé -see samples on the Pomerantz Career Center website.
  • Show paid and/or volunteer work experience, including jobs, employers and dates of employment. Also include your experiences working with children.
  • Essay (see TEP Application website for essay topic)
  • TEP Application (complete this online through the TK20 system) (create an account from TEP Application website, recommend using Google Chrome)
  • Copy of transcript(s) for all transfer work not found on MyUI grade report at the time of application.

APPLY BY:

  • March 1 (priority deadline for fall semester start)
  • October 1 (priority deadline for spring semester start)
  • Once the priority deadline has passed, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until May 1 for fall semester admission and until December 1 for spring semester admission. Some TEP may reach capacity before the final deadline, so application by the priority deadline is highly recommended.
Additional Application requirements  
Art (K-12) 12 s.h. Art & Art History coursework with a GPA ≥ 3.0
English ≥1 recommendation from an English professor, preferably from University of Iowa, and 12 s.h. English courses completed or in progress; see Application website for list of specific courses
Foreign Language 12 s.h. of courses in language of program
Math Calculus I & II with GPA ≥ 2.5
Music (K-12) Admission to the School of Music plus 12 s.h. of music courses with a minimum GPA of ≥3.0.
Science no specific courses required
Social Studies Completion of 9 s.h. and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in these courses: 3 s.h. in HIST; 6 additional s.h. across Hist, Poli, Econ, Geog, Soc, Anth, or Psy
Licenses & Endorsements  
  • Secondary 5th – 12th grade

1 Secondary Education Interest: Complete one of the following to satisfy both QFR Gen Ed and the math content area requirement for licensure: MATH 1020, 1350, 1440, 1460, 1550, or 1850; STAT 1010, 1020, 1030, or 2010; CS 1020, 1110, or 1210.
2EDTL:4900 Foundations of Special Education satisfies Diversity and Inclusion if taken at UIowa.
3 EPLS 4180 Human Relations for the Classroom Teacher is taken after TEP admission and satisfies Values and Culture.

  • EDTL 4900 Foundations of Special Education (3 s.h.)
  •  EPLS 3000 Foundations of Education (3 s.h.)

Note: ALL TEP Core Courses (including those listed above) must be completed with a grade of C- or higher.
