Informatics BA and BS Requirements

All Informatics students complete the informatics core, one (BA) or two (BS) electives, a statistics course, and a set of courses in their chosen cognate area.  Required number of semester hours for the major depends on the choice of cognate area.

Informatics Core

The Informatics core consists of six required computing courses that emphasize data manipulation, databases, and networking.  It provides more applications-oriented content than the traditional Computer Science curriculum yet is also designed to offer students a sound basis in underlying Computer Science themes and techniques.

  • CS:1110 Introduction to Computer Science 3 sh
  • CS:2110 Programming for Informatics 4 sh
  • CS:2420 Analyzing Data for Informatics 3 sh
  • CS:2520 Human-Computer Interaction for Informatics 3 sh
  • CS:2620 Server-Side Development for Informatics 3 sh
  • CS:3910 Informatics Project 3 sh

Informatics Electives

Students must complete one course from a list of approved informatics electives.  Course selection must be approved by an informatics advisor.

  • BAIS:4220 Advanced Database Management and Big Data 3 sh
  • Any CS course numbered 3000-4999 (excluding 3910 and 4510) 3-4 sh

Statistics Course

Students must complete one introductory statistics course from the following list.

  • PSY:2811 Research Methods and Data Analysis in Psychology I 3 sh
  • SOC:2160 Applied Statistics for Social Scientists 3 sh
  • STAT:1020 Elementary Statistics and Inference 3 sh
  • STAT:1030 Statistics for Business 4 sh
  • STAT:2010 Statistical Methods and Computing 3 sh
  • STAT:2020 Probability and Statistics for the Engineering and Physical Sciences 3 sh
  • STAT:3120 Probability and Statistics 4 sh
  • STAT:3510 Biostatistics 3 sh
  • STAT:4143 Introduction to Statistical Methods 3 sh

Cognates

Informatics students must select a cognate area in another discipline and complete all requirements in that area (18-25 sh).

  • Art
  • Bioinformatics (BS)
  • Economics
  • Geoinformatics
  • Health Informatics
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Linguistics
  • Media
  • Medical Informatics (BS)
  • Music
  • Social Informatics
  • Or an Individualized Cognate (done in consultation with the department)

A full list of each cognate’s requirements can be found in the General Catalog
