How to Apply to Osteopathic Medical School

How to Apply to Osteopathic Medical School

  1. Read the information on applying to medical school at the AACOM website.

  2. Shadow at least one DO and talk about the osteopathic philosophy. Most DO schools require a letter of evaluation from a practicing DO. Therefore, we encourage you to form a relationship with a DO as soon as possible. Ideally in your first or second year of college.

  3. Select evaluators to write your letters. Provide each of them with a copy of your activities and personal statement. You will send individual letters because we do not have a Premedical Committee at The University of Iowa. Read all of the information at the website below including the FAQ.

  4. If you are worried about the cost of applying, research the fee assistance program.

  5. The Academic Advising Center recommends that you complete your AACOMAS application in June or July. Most osteopathic medical schools accept students on a basis of rolling admission. Therefore, it is in your best interest to apply early in the summer. After receiving secondary applications, complete and return them as swiftly as possible.

  6. Contact the Career Center in C310 of the Pomerantz Center to schedule a practice interview.

  7. If you plan to apply to Des Moines University, read all of the information at their website for applicants.
